I have a wide range of research interests covering the fields of macroecology, global change
biology, ecosystem function, invertebrate ecology, conservation biology, population ecology
and biodiversity management.

My Honorary Fellowship at Edinburgh University is associated with a transdisciplinary research
team in the Centre for the Study of Environmental Change and Sustainability which is led by
Mark Rounsevell. The main focus of this collaboration is the implemementation of a mechanistic
vegetation model, LPJ GUESS, in order to better understand the potential vulnerability of
seminatural vegetation to climate change.

My Honorary Fellowship at Salford University, in the School of Environment and Life Sciences, was
associated with an exploration of how the 'CBD Ecosystem Approach' might be implemented
using existing information. This built on previous work that developed spatially explicit
approaches for defining the potential for habitat restoration around existing sites.

My former role as a senior specialist in Natural England required me to provide a bridge
between science and practice through the development of spatially explicit, ecological models
and the provision of specialist ecological advice to policy-makers and practitioners. This
experience has led me to develop a particular interest in improving the integration of science,
policy and practice through more effective knowledge transfer activities that respect and
understand these very different 'communities of practice'. This now forms the basis of my
freelance work
for governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations.
